Govt. College of Physical Education, Bhubaneswar, Odisha was established in the year 1957 with a view to spread Physical Education among the youth of the state and physical fitness among the physical education lovers. It took its inception in a rental portion of the Barabati Stadium. Cuttack with 42 seats for C.P.E.D course only. Gradually women candidates were included and B.P.Ed courses was added in the year 1980 and 1985 respectively to meet the higher professional training. The college continued in Barabati Stadium till 12.6.1994 and was shifted to Kalinga Stadium. Bhubaneswar w.e.f. 13.6.1994.
The college has been producing trained teachers in Physical Education who take care of sports talents from grassroot levels in the school & colleges of the states as well as the country. The college is affiliated to Utkal University and N.C.T.E. (National Council of Teacher Education) and U.G.C.
At the Time of establishment, The College was under the Department of Education and subsequently came under the administrative control of the Department of Sport & Youth Services Government of Odisha wef. The aim of the college is to upgrade the status of Physical Education by producing qualified and qualitative personnel in Physical Education, Sports and allied fields. The college is functioning at Tamando, Bhubaneswar. The college imparts Two years Bachelor's Degree course in Physical Education (B.P.Ed.) and Two years Master's Degree course in Physical Education (M.P.Ed.). Govt. College of Physical Education, Bhubaneswar is affiliated to Utkal University and recognized by National Council for Teacher Education (N.C.T.E.), New Delhi and by University Grants Commission [ u/s 2 (f) and 12 (B) ofthe UGC Act.1956]. Govt. College of Physical Education, Sambalpur, Kulundi was established in 1993 offering B.P.Ed. (Two years) course only and is affiliated to Sambalpur University and recognized by N.C.T.E. and U.G.C.
